Former President Barack Obama, campaigning for Virginia gubernatorial candidate Ralph Northam in Richmond, Virginia, urges the crowd to reject the politicis of division and embrace our whole history, "the good and the bad." Pointing to his own lineage, the former president says that he found out that he is a distant cousin of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. "Think about that," he says. "I'll bet he's spinning in his grave." he also notes Thomas Jefferson's past with slavery, but says we can acknowledge his words in the Declaration of Independence "that all men are created equal." He ends by saying that we can recognize that even though our past is not perfect, "we can honor the constitutional ideals that have allowed us to come this far." close
