In the second day of the confirmation hearings for Judge Kavanaugh, Senator Cory Booker probed an opinion regarding a voter ID law in South Carolina. Relying on a study written by Richard Sobel and published by the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race & Justice at Harvard Law School, Senator Booker noted that one then-85-year-old voter had to spend "36 bucks" trying to obtain the necessary documents to get a photo voter ID. He then drew an apt historical connection to the poll tax: in 1895, the poll tax in South Carolina was $1.00, which is equivalent to $30.00 today--less than the cost of complying with the required photo ID law. close
