Running for Governor in 2016, candidate Chris Sununu said that he'd support background checks and common sense gun violence prevention measures. His statement was in response to whether he'd support background checks to keep guns out of the hands of prohibited persons, like domestic abusers.

"I do also support universal background checks, where appropriate. To the point of the question, it's a very important question, when you're dealing with domestic violence issues, we must be standing up.
