Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan tells a congressional committee that agency facilities are not equipped to handle the volume of families attempting to cross the southern border with Mexico. "Our infrastructure is incompatible with this reality. Our border patrol stations and ports of entry were built to handle mostly male, single adults in custody, not families or children," McAleenan says. He also blames smugglers for the increase in illegal crossings, and he calls the situation a "border security and humanitarian crisis." close
