"I'd liked to really throw something on the table that I haven’t heard discussed before, and it’s about the vote, and the fact that the 26th Amendment gave 18 year olds the vote, and my feeling is that I’m puzzled why we have stopped at 18, and why we don’t ponder perhaps giving children at a younger age, perhaps even sixteen, and I’ve spoken to people who even think a lower age, and incorporate civics, and politics, and voting into the curriculum, because one of the problems we’re having in schools today is challenging students to get engaged, and involved in the process.

Then we have a 35% turnout in the polls, and we’re puzzled why we don’t get more people involved. I feel like if we use the election, and the voting process as a launch pad, and we get young students involved at an early age in the schools, where we can stimulate their interest, we might be able to raise our turnout." - John Coffey (Gainesville, Florida - June 1, 1996) close
