Twelve Republicans joined Democrats in voting 59-41 to approve a resolution blocking President Trump's recent national emergency declaration to deal with the situation on the southern border with Mexico. Prior to the vote, Republican Senators Mike Lee and Thom Tillis, along with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer closed out the debate on the resolution. Senator Lee called the president's action "executive overreach" and Senator Schumer warned that the Senate was being asked to change the balance of power, which would set "an awful precedent no matter who is president." Senator Tillis, who initially supported the resolution in a recent op-ed, voted against it. close
