Fiscal Year 2020 Defense Budget Request

Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan and General Joseph Dunford, the Joint Chiefs of Staff chair, testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee on President Trump’s fiscal year 2020 defense budget request. The Pentagon’s $718 billion budget, a five percent increase from fiscal year 2019 levels, includes $9.2 billion for emergency construction and $164 billion for Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO). Throughout the hearing, lawmakers questioned the top military officials about potential cuts to military construction projects in order to fund the president’s border wall. In addition, Acting Defense Secretary Shanahan, a former Boeing executive, said he supports a federal investigation involving his ties to the company. close
