Addressing supporters inside a former automobile manufacturing plant, South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg formally announces his candidacy for president of the United States. The 37-year-old mayor turned presidential hopeful takes on what he calls the "impossible promise of a bygone era" of President Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan, saying, "The problem is, they're telling us to look for greatness in all the wrong places. Because if there is one thing the city of South Bend has shown, it's that there is no such thing as an honest politics that revolves around the word 'again.'" Without naming the president directly, he accuses him of "selling a myth" to industrial and rural America based on resentment and nostalgia in an effort "to stop the clock." "It is time to walk away from the politics of the past and toward something that is totally different....This time is not about winning an election, it's about winning an era, the mayor says. close
