John Bercow, the speaker of the British House of Commons, defends his decision to intervene in the debate over Brexit early on in the parliamentary session. In March, Speaker Bercow ruled that Theresa May's deal, which had been previously rejected by the Commons, could not be brought back for a third time without "substantial" changes. He also says that Parliament will have its say on the matter of a no-deal Brexit. "The idea that Parliament is going to be evacuated for the center stage of debate on Brexit is simply unimaginable. The idea the House won't have its say is for the birds." the speaker says. Mr. Bercow is expected to stand down as speaker later this summer after nine years in the role. close
