At his confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Nominee General Mark Milley says that if he is confirmed military leaders at the Pentagon will not be intimidated by anyone, including the president. "Arlington is full of our comrades, and we understand absolutely full well the hazards of our chosen profession," Milley says. “We know what this is about, and we will not be intimidated into making stupid decisions. We will give our best military advice and not keep the consequences to ourselves," he says. The general also cautions against a premature withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan before a negotiated settlement with the Taliban is concluded, saying it would be "a strategic mistake," and he also says that he believes that the U.S. should keep some troops in Iraq and Syria. close
