Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), who is seeking her party's presidential nomination, clashes with and Defense Secretary Nominee Mark Esper over his refusal to recuse himself from matters involving Raytheon, where he worked as a lobbyist for over six years. Mr. Esper says his ethics lawyers have advised him not to extend his recusal, as his predecessor Secretary Patrick Shanahan did regarding Boeing, because the current rules in place are sufficient. Senator Warren goes on to say, "The American people deserve to know that you are making decisions in our country's best security interests not in your own financial interests. You can't make those commitments to this committee that means you should not be confirmed as secretary of Defense." Secretary Esper pushes back against the criticism and defends his record in business and military and government service and the oath he swore to uphold the Constitution. close
