Beginning at about 4:50 p.m., senators debated an amendment to the Veterans Department appropriations bill sponsored by Senator Bumpers which would eliminate U.S. funding for the international space station. Opponents argued that there was not sufficient justification for the space station while supporters stressed the need for further space exploration both for its own sake and to improve the quality of life on Earth. The Senate voted 69 to 31 to table the amendment. close
