In a speech at a foreign policy forum in Berlin, Germany, on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warns of the twin threats posed by Russia and China. Reflecting on the three-decade anniversary which ultimately led to the reunification of Germany and the end of the Cold War, Secretary Pompeo speaks of the lessons of that time. "We thought we could divert our resources away from alliances, and our militaries. We were wrong," he says. "Today, Russia, led by a former KGB officer once stationed in Dresden, invades its neighbors and slays political opponents." He also criticizes China, saying the Communist Party was "shaping a new vision of authoritarianism." “We must recognize that free nations are in a competition of values with unfree nations,” he says. close
