Since late 2019, the Senate Finance Committee's top Democrat Ron Wyden has pressed Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin for information about alleged Trump administration interference in the prosecution of Turkey's state-run Halkbank, accused of a record-breaking money laundering scheme to Iran.
In November, Mnuchin disclosed seven meetings with top Turkish officials, including that country's President Erdogan and his son-in-law Berat Albayrak in the Oval Office.
"They were directly implicated in the sanctions scheme," Wyden noted. "You met with them. Doesn't this send a horrible picture to pose in the Oval Office with sanctions violators? Is it just open season for sanctions violators in your Treasury Department?"
