The Origins of the Secession Crisis and the Civil War

On the 150th anniversary of the secession winter, this session takes a new look at an old question: what were the causes of the Civil War? Each of the three presenters has recently authored a book on the causes of the conflict, and each work takes a different approach. Tthe conversation will examine the role of slavery, economics, political parties, discourse, and irrational motives. The session will explore whether it is possible to integrate the differing interpretations of the war’s origins or whether the various schools of thought remain irreconcilable. Finally, the session will touch on how new sources, questions, viewpoints, and methods might move the study of the Civil War forward in the new decade.
