At a briefing with D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) and other city officials, Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy addresses the security breach at the U.S. Capitol saying, "Yesterday was a horrible and shameful day in our history." He goes on to provide an update on the Pentagon's response, saying the entire D.C. National Guard has been mobilized and that 6,200 guardsmen will be present in D.C. by the weekend, with reinforcements coming from neighboring states and beyond. He also says they are currently erecting a seven foot non-scalable fence around the Capitol building and that 800 guardsmen will be put in place this afternoon and will remain in the area for the next 30 days. close
