CDC Director Rochelle Walensky says the number of COVID infections across the country has dropped to pre-Thanksgiving levels. Hospitalizations are also down slightly to 11,400 a day from their peak on January 5. However deaths continue to rise, albeit at a slower rate, and averaging around 3,100 per day. She says the decline in hospitalizations will likely lead to a drop in the number of deaths, as well. However, she cautions that new more transmissible variants of the virus could reverse these downward trends and urges the public to continue to adhere to public health guidelines, especially during the Super Bowl this weekend. close
