The House approves a bill naming a post office in Georgetown, South Carolina after Joseph Rainey, the first Black person to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. Rainey won a special election in 1870, took his seat on December 12 that year and served until March 3, 1879. Rainey died in 1887 aged 55. close
