Former Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund and former House Sergeant-at-Arms Paul Irving respond to questions about their interactions by phone during the January 6 attack. Sund says he called Irving at 1:09pm that day requesting additional help and that he made a follow-up call at 1:21pm to check on the status of the request. He also says Irving needed to run the request up the chain of command. Irving, who was on the House floor at 1:09pm, says he has no recollection or record of receiving the 1:09pm call and says he did not talk with Sund until after he left the House Chamber at around 1:30pm. Irving also says that Sund indicated to him that the situation was deteriorating and that he might be making a request at a later time. Irving denies saying he had to run a request up the chain of command and says he notified leadership of the situation. He also says that when the request was made after 2pm it was approved. Both men resigned in the wake of the deadly attack. close
