Responding to questions from Wisconsin Republican Senator Ron Johnson, Secretary Blinken defends the Biden administration's decision to waive sanctions on the Russian Nord Stream 2 Pipeline, saying that construction was nearly 95 percent complete, while also agreeing that as a practical matter the pipeline was "a bad idea." He also pushes back against a claim by Senator Johnson that construction was stopped previously when sanctions were imposed, saying, "No, in fact, we didn't by definition." The secretary told Congress Monday that mitigation measures are in place should Russia try to use the pipeline, which bypasses Ukraine and goes to Germany, as an economic weapon. close
