Pentagon Spokesman John Kirby says the three battalions will be in place at Hamid Karzai International Airport and Kuwait by the end of the weekend to aid in the evacuation of thousands of U.S. civilian personnel and Afghan refugees under the SIV program. Mr. Kirby also says the U.S. is prepared to adjust if its withdrawal deadline of August 31 if Kabul should fall to the Taliban. He says the Pentagon is deeply concerned by the speed of Taliban gains in other cities across the country and says now is the time for Afghans to unite. "No outcome has to be inevitable," he says. close
