In prepared testimony before the House Financial Services Committee, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says the U.S. is in the midst of a "fragile but rapid recovery from the pandemic-induced recession." She says "significant challenges" remain because of the Delta variant and that it continues to "suppress the speed of the recovery." However, she says that she "remains optimistic about the medium-term trajectory" of the economy and says that she expects that the U.S. will "return to full employment next year. Secretary Yellen says the economic rebound was "never a forgone conclusion" but that she attributes the the economy's over performance over other countries to the legislation passed by Congress, including the CARES Act, the Consolidated Appropriations Act and the American Rescue Plan. close
