Pentagon Spokesman John Kirby says the U.S. is deeply concerned as fears grow of a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine. He says that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered 8,500 troops, mostly ground forces, be placed on "heightened alert" to help with the defense of NATO allies. Mr. Kirby says that no deployment orders have been given to the troops and emphasizes that the change in posture is about readiness and also to send a message that the U.S. is committed to NATO. close
