Former President Bill Clinton pays tribute to Madeleine Albright, the woman he tapped to be ambassador to the U.N. and secretary of State in his two terms in office. The former president recalls his last conversation with her two weeks before she died, selecting her to oversee the transition of his national security team before he took office in 1993, her years at the U.N. and the State Department, their work on Kosovo, climate change, and the many books she wrote during the course of her life. "She could be the voice of America at its best," President Clinton says of his decision to nominate her as U.N. ambassador. He also speaks about the war in Ukraine and the threat to democracy at home and the need for vigilance to protect it. "Freedom, democracy, and the rule of law are not permanently enshrined just because we survived 200 plus years," he says. close
