In his opening statement at a Senate Banking Committee hearing on the housing market, Pennsylvania Republican Senator Pat Toomey criticizes the Democrats' reconciliation proposal, saying it creates a "slush fund" for greening subsidized housing and warns that it will lead to slower economic growth, fuel inflation, and further increases in housing prices and rent. " I guess the theory is that at a time of surging housing costs, the solution is to put solar panels on Section 8 housing," he says. Senator Toomey goes on to say that what's needed is less government intervention and regulation and more private capital to make the housing market more competitive and affordable. close
