Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell announces his support for legislation that would limit the vice president's role in counting electoral votes to a ministerial one and would raise the threshold to object to electors. The bipartisan legislation, sponsored by Republican Senator Susan Collins and Democratic Senator Joe Manchin came about as a result of the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, and former President Trump's pressure campaign to change the 2020 election results. "One party going it alone would be a non-starter, but in my view the House bill is a non-starter. We have one shot to get this right...I strongly support the Collins legislation as introduced, and assuming that we make no changes here today--or at the most technical changes--I'd be proud to vote for it and to help advance it," McConnell says. close
