In 1979, the U.S. cable television industry created C-SPAN in order to put the U.S. House of Representatives on satellite, becoming the first television channel anywhere committed to live, gavel-to-gavel coverage of its national legislature. C-SPAN has since committed itself to assisting other organizations and individuals wanting to bring coverage of their legislatures to television.
