On This Day: Fall of the Berlin Wall

Construction of the Berlin Wall began in August of 1961, separating West Berlin from East Berlin. The goal was to prevent citizens of East Berlin from emigrating to the West. The wall was a symbol of the Cold War until its destruction in 1989.
