On This Day: The Establishment of the Department of Homeland Security

On this day, the Department of Homeland Security is created and becomes a Cabinet-level agency. The department was created after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, "to ensure a homeland that is safe, secure, and resilient against terrorism and other hazards." There are five homeland security missions: 1) Prevent terrorism and enhancing security, 2) Secure and manage our borders, 3) Enforce and administer our immigration laws, 4) Safeguard and secure cyberspace, and 5) Ensure resilience to disasters.

President Bush calls on Congress to create the Department of Homeland Security

President Bush talked about the need to enact legislation forming a new Department of Homeland Security and called on legislators to enact such legislation in a lame duck session of Congress. November 12, 2002
