    Veterans' Benefits Evaluation Process

    The House Committee on Veterans' Affairs held a hearing on the Veterans Benefit Administration’s (VBA) process for eliminating the backlog of disability claims at the Veterans Affairs Department. In the first panel, three VBA whistleblowers told of misappropriations, misconduct, and retaliation for reporting wrongdoing in the department. They called the problems systemic and a “culture of corruption” in which management bullies and harasses workers who report problems. At the start of the second panel of VBA officials, Committee Chair Jeff Duncan (R-FL) described the July 2, 2014, day-long, unannounced visit committee staff took to the Philadelphia VBA office.

    Book Discussion on The Crash of 2016

    Thom Hartmann talked about his book, The Crash of 2016: The Plot to Destroy America-and What We Can Do to Stop It, in which he argues that the U.S. is becoming a country run by and for the very rich, while the middle class is slowly being destroyed. He said that without a strong middle class, the U.S. is likely heading for an economic implosion that will make the Great Depression seem tame. Mr. Hartmann spoke at the Operating Engineers Local 49 Union Hall in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
