Professor Barzun talked about the value of education and the role the school plays in the formative years of life. Following his remarks he answered questions from the audience.

Jacques Barzun was born in France in 1907 and emigrated to the United States in 1920. He was a history professor at Columbia University and, later, Dean of Faculties and Provost. He is the author of more than thirty books. The most recent is From Dawn to Decadence: 500 Years of Western Cultural Life, 1500 to the Present. He talked about his life and work and responded to telephone calls and electronic mail from viewers.

Mr. Barzun talked with Mr. Schlesinger about his new book From Dawn to Decadence: 500 Years of Western Cultural Life, published Harper Collins. The two addressed a number of issues from the book, from the rise of the nation-state, the resurgence of fundamentalism, and the status of cities as centers of culture and creativity. They also responded to questions from members of the audience.

Mark Toner responded to reporters' questions on a range of international policy issues in Syria, Turkey and Cuba. Other topics included the Iran nuclear deal, combating ISIL,* and human rights.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Gina McCarthy talked about the Obama administration’s Clean Power Plan, the nation’s first-ever carbon pollution standards for existing U.S. power plants. She addressed criticism of their negative impact on jobs and consumers' electricity bills and expressed confidence in the legality of the new rules. She also commented on At the top of her remarks, Ms. McCarthy commented on her agency’s response to the recent Colorado mine toxic spill.

Former Governor Jeb Bush (R-FL), a candidate for the Republican 2016 presidential nomination, spoke about foreign policy at the Reagan Library in California. He said that the ISIL* terror group was spreading like a pandemic globally and he laid out a plan to defeat them in Iraq and Syria. He also discussed why the Iran nuclear agreement was bad for U.S. security. After his remarks he responded to questions from former Ambassador Tuttle and members of the audience.
