The Atlantic Council held a panel discussion to mark the launch of the Atlantic Council’s Task Force on the Future of Iraq, which brings together over twenty-five Iraq experts from around the world. The panelists discussed the implications of the Iraq surge, troop withdrawal by the Obama administration, combating the ISIL*, and relations between Iraq and Iran.

*The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), or the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS or DAISH/DAESH in Arabic), is a militant group that has called itself the Islamic State.

Former Governor Jon Huntsman (R-UT) talked about the 2016 presidential election and the approach his No Labels group is taking to campaign issues, including the nation’s fiscal security. No Labels' mission is to get the Democratic and Republican parties to work together more.

Zhu Guangyao, Chinese Vice Minister of Finance, talked about China’s vision for economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region and the role of the region in shaping the global economy. He spoke about China’s economic policies, U.S.-China relations, and the need for global economic structural reforms.

Admiral Cecil Haney, commander of the U.S. Strategic Command, talked about the role of strategic deterrence in the 21st century. Topics included emerging threats, unrest in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, and the growing military capabilities of various nations. Admiral Haney also spoke about how deterrence in the 21st century differs from that of the Cold War. Former Ambassador Huntsman made opening remarks.

“Strategic Deterrence in the Twenty-First Century” was a Commanders Series event of the Atlantic Council’s Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security.

Panelists talked about U.S.-China relations under the leadership of Chinese President Xi Jinping. They discussed President Obama’s recent trip to the region, the agreement between the two countries to address climate change, the benefits of the Obama administration’s emphasis on the Asia-Pacific region, and cybersecurity issues. Former U.S. ambassador to China and 2012 presidential candidate Jon Huntsman among his comments said he believes the U.S. was missing the economic piece of the relationship.

Former U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman spoke at the Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars. He focused on the global role of the U.S, and global perceptions of the nation. NBC’s Andrea Mitchell moderated. Among his remarks he said that the rise of the “political professional,” meaning K Street lobbyists, was one of the reasons Congress could get nothing done. He also cited the gerrymandering of congressional districts as a problem.

General Philip M. Breedlove reviewed the NATO summit in Wales He also discussed current operations specifically involving Russia’s intervention in Ukraine.

Vice President Joe Biden talked about Russia’s intervention in Ukraine. He said that NATO must be “resolute” at imposing costs on Russia for violating Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Vice President Biden’s speech was part of an Atlantic Councils “Toward a Europe Whole and Free Conference,” commemorating multiple anniversaries significant in the transatlantic community.
