This House session continued debate on the Republican Welfare Reform proposal. This bill converts nearly 30 welfare programs in to block grants for the states. Federal spending would be limited and states would get more authority over running those welfare programs. Some reports say the move could save nearly $70 billion. The session began with One Minute speeches on a variety of issues including the Republican Contract with America, the Personal Responsibility Act, welfare reform, the IRS hotline, the loss of U.S. manufacturing jobs, new antibiotics derived from sharks and treating Native groups as states with the block grant proposal.
