The U.S. Senate convened and took up debate on a number of issues. Senate began consideration of S. 21, to designate certain lands in the California desert as wilderness, and to establish Death Valley, Joshua Tree, and Mojave National Parks. Members spoke both for and against the designation of the land as a National Park and rejected an amendment to designate a portion of the land as a National Monument and place it under the administration of the Bureau of Land Management. The Senate then stood in recess until 2:15pm that day.
