After staying in all day, night, and into the next morning, the Senate approved the fiscal year 2021 budget resolution. The vote count was 51-50 with Vice President Harris casting the tie-breaking vote. The legislation instructs Senate committees to draft a bill based on President Biden's $1.9 trillion dollar COVID-19 pandemic relief plan. Senators also passed several amendments to the measure, including one that would reduce the number of people who are eligible for direct payments and another that would prevent an immediate increase to the federal minimum wage. This relief package was being done through a process known as reconciliation, which allows budget-related legislation to pass by a simple majority.
