Senate Passes Foreign Aid Package 79-18
Senate Session - March 14, 2024

The Senate confirmed Dennis Hankins’s nomination for U.S. ambassador to Haiti. Mr. Hankins was nominated by President Biden in May 2023, and the Port-au-Prince-based post had been without a Senate-confirmed ambassador since 2021. Members also voted to advance the nomination of Nicole Berner to be to be a judge for the U.S. Fourth Circuit, which hears federal appeals from Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) in floor remarks called for a two-state solution for Israel and Palestinians, amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. He outlined four obstacles to peace in the Middle East, called on the Israeli government to hold new elections after the threat of Hamas is radically reduced, and said that Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas should step down. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) responded to Senator Schumer’s remarks, calling his comments “unprecedented.”
