Participants discussed the legacy of the slaughterhouse cases which dealt with the interpretation of the Fourteenth Amendment. They focused particularly on the strict interpretation of the “privileges and immunities” clause and how this has led to interpretive conflicts over other parts of the amendment, including the “due process” clause, which impact the boundaries of state versus federal government. They also took questions from the audience. The Supreme Court handed down its decision in the slaughterhouse cases in 1873. close
