The Senate continued the impeachment trial of President William Jefferson Clinton with the first day of presentations by the president’s defense team. Charles Ruff, White House Counsel, argued that the articles represented a rush to judgment by the House and countered the House managers charges by emphasizing inconsistencies in the grand jury testimony. In addressing the issue of witnesses he said they were not necessary but asked the Senate if they really wanted to call Linda Tripp to “explore her motivations.” close
