The subcommittee reviewed the 1989 decision by the Food and Drug Administration to ban the importation of the French drug RU486. Testimony was heard on the effect this ban has had on medical research in the United States and on the approval of new drugs which may have multiple benefits. RU486 is used in France as a successful alternative to surgical abortion. It also has been used successfully to treat brain cancer, breast cancer and Cushing’s syndrome. Researchers in the U.S. want access to the drug because its ability to interfere with human hormonal processes may have numerous other medical applications. close
