Seven former hostages held by Iraq spoke with reporters after meeting with President Bush. The hostages expressed confidence in the U.S. administration’s policies concerning the Persian Gulf crisis. The meeting was the first public welcome from the White House for returning hostages. President Bush indicated that such meetings had been avoided previously to reduce the value of the hostages to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein as “bargaining chips.” close
