Author Mark Curriden spoke to students at American University about his book Contempt of Court, the story of the two black lawyers and their client accused of rape in Tennessee in 1906. The case would have been the first criminal case argued before the U.S. Supreme Court, but the defendant was lynched before it was presented. Mr. Curriden talked about the influence of the case on subsequent Sixth Amendment rulings and the power of federal courts. close
