Washington and Lee University students convened their annual mock Republican convention which included nominating speeches and state delegations. Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) spoke about the need to elect a Republican president and about the accomplishments of the Republican Congress. Former Education Secretary William Bennett talked about U.S. history and the history of the Republican Party. He criticized President Bill Clinton for lowering the moral tone of the nation. Former Senator Bob Dole, 1996 Republican presidential candidate, delivered the keynote address about the great opportunities ahead for the Republican Party. He also talked about the Declaration of Independence. Student delegates gave nominating speeches for John McCain, Gary Bauer, George W. Bush, Steve Forbes and Alan Keyes. Governor Bush was nominated as the presidential candidate and Rep. J.C. Watts as the vice presidential candidate. close
