The Congressional Human Rights Caucus, a bipartisan organization concerned with human rights violations around the world, heard testimony on the recent occupation of Vilnius, Lithuania by Soviet troops, which replaced the elected legislature of Lithuania with a pro-Soviet Union and anti-independence faction. Thirteen Lithuanians were killed in the fighting during the occupation. Mr. Lantos noted the similarities between the crackdown by the Soviet Union during the Persian Gulf crisis and the crackdown by Soviet troops in Hungary in 1956 during the Suez crisis. close
