Rep. Les Aspin (D-WI), chairman of the House Armed Services committee, spoke to reporters after the U.S. and allied invasion of Iraq which began earlier in the evening. He said the initial air attack seemed to be going along the same lines as the hypothetical plan developed by the House Armed Services committee after hearings on U.S. policy in the Persian Gulf over the previous month. Mr. Aspin said the “nightmare scenario,” a preemptive strike by Saddam Hussein upon Israel, had been avoided by the U.S. strike. He also predicted that some ground forces would be necessary to liberate Kuwait, and that the liberation would take weeks, not days, and would involve some casualties. close
