On Thursday, January 24, the Senate passed a resolution condemning the Soviet Union for the crackdown on dissent and the independence movements in Lithuania and Latvia. Senator Donald Riegle (D-MI), Senator Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ), Senator Bob Kasten (R-WI) and Latvian Vice President Dainis Ivanis spoke to reporters on the resolution, which urged the U.S. to take a harsher stance towards the Soviet Union. close
