Professor Gallagher talked about editing Fighting for the Confederacy: The Personal Recollections of General Edward Porter Alexander, published by the University of North Carolina Press in a lecture called “Confederate General’s Memoir -- A Detective Story.” General Alexander’s critical account of the Civil War, Military Memoirs of a Confederate, has been in continuous print since 1907. Archivists did not realize that his papers, stored at an historical society, also contained his personal memoir written only for his family and not for publication. Professor Gallagher told the story of his discovery of this unique account and of how General Alexander came to write two different accounts of the war. After his presentation, Mr. Gallagher took questions from members of the audience. close
