Sweet Pea at War: A History of USS Portland
The USS Portland was one of the few American gunships remaining after the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. The U.S. Navy relied heavily on the Portland, nicknamed Sweet Pea, in the battles of Midway, Guadalcanal, and Coral Sea. Over the course of her service in the Navy, the Portland rescued thousands of stranded sailors, protected scores of aircraft carriers, and provided heavy artillery against the Japanese in the Pacific. Following his remarks he answered questions from members of the audience.
