Mr. Koeppel talked about his book, Water for Gotham: A History, published by Princeton University Press. The book describes the history of New York City’s water supply and the development of a clean water source. The author discussed early settlements, the problems that led to decades of polluted water, local politics and powerful New Yorkers involved in the water business, and the eventual development of the Croton Aqueduct in 1842. He also described the yellow fever and cholera epidemics that killed thousands of people as a result of contaminated water. The author answered questions from members of the audience. close
