Mr. Williams, Lt. Gen. Kelly and Admiral Herrington spoke to reporters in the Pentagon on events in the Persian Gulf war. Mr. Williams reported Secretary of Defense Cheney’s reaction to a speech broadcast in Iraq earlier in the day by Saddam Hussein, which was one of regret that Iraq did not appear to be withdrawing or preparing to withdraw from Kuwait. On the 36th day of the campaign, Lt. Gen. Kelly stated there were over 530,000 U.S. military personnel in the Persian Gulf, and air bombing sorties against Iraq continued unabated. Lt. Gen. Kelly reported that U.S. troops were engaging in missions, both offensive and reconnaissance, across the Saudi border into Kuwait, but no troops were staying in Kuwait upon completion of the mission. close
