Author Amir Aczel talked about his book, The Riddle of the Compass: The Invention That Changed the World, published by Harcourt. He said that the origins of the compass stretch back to ancient China, but it wasn’t used as a navigational tool until the 1300s when the mariners of Amalfi in Italy began to utilize it along with a 16-point wind direction tool for more effective sails. After the presentation the author answered questions from members of the audience. close
